'The End is Nigh'

With the project now entering its final week it’s all systems go amongst the IDT team!

Following a big push from the Analysis team, a detailed correlative analysis has concluded that angular velocities are the main kinematic parameters contributing to concussions across the investigated FEA load cases. In particular, the previously developed BrIC injury criterion which implements angular velocities as well as 'critical constants' was found to correlate highest with our results and has now been identified as the injury criterion to be used within the SGG system. The team is now working hard to identify key threshold values for detecting concussion before working with the Design team to develop the final cost function and concussion alert signal to be inserted to our system software.

Amongst the Design team, significant progress is being made with analysis of our experimental testing results, although not yet confirmed original results suggest the SGG device correlates well with the Tokyo Tech professional sensor in capturing values of angular velocity for the BrIC criterion. Design of an impressive miniaturised version of our system is also ongoing that underlines the possibility for this device to be adopted across the world of sport in the future.

With Christmas finally approaching and team members soon ready to break for vacation the team is now turning its focus to reporting the progress we have made over the last few months. This will culminate in our final presentation at Tokyo Tech, to be completed on the 16/12 followed by submission of our written technical paper to our host universities.

Signigficant progress and key achievements have been recognised over the last week as a result of huge efforts from the team. One week to go and ‘the end is nigh’, however, a fully working system suggestive of a highly successful project looks more likely now than it ever has!
